The long-term goals of women’s cricket, according to ICC General Manager-Cricket Wasim Khan, include “participating in the Olympic Games.”
The Commonwealth Games in 2026, which will be held in Australia, will include a women’s T20 cricket category. According to an announcement from the ICC, it was one of the 20 sports that will be performed at the upcoming edition in Victoria. It comes after the popularity of women’s cricket, which was introduced earlier this year in the Birmingham edition.
Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, said: “We are pleased to know that women’s cricket will be included in the Commonwealth Games in Victoria. “After the sport’s enormous success in recent years, especially Birmingham, it will be another big milestone. Our long-term goals, which include participating in the Olympic Games, are perfectly aligned with the sustained growth and upward trajectory of both T20 cricket and the women’s game.
“A dramatic upward slope has been seen in women’s cricket, with standards rising and a fan base expanding quickly. We will never forget the 86,174 spectators that filled Melbourne for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 final, and we can’t wait for another chance to promote women’s soccer, this time in Victoria in 2026.”
Hosts Australia is the current champion after defeating India by nine runs in Edgbaston in August to claim the gold medal. After defeating England in the decisive match, New Zealand won the bronze medal.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in four regional hubs—Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, and Gippsland—from March 17 to March 29.
Following men’s 50-over cricket in the competition in Kuala Lumpur, women’s cricket and the T20 format were first featured in the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
