With an appealing 55 off 44 balls, Shafali Verma once more demonstrated her match-winning talent as India defeated Bangladesh by 59 runs to win their fourth game and secure a berth in the Women’s Asia Cup T20 semifinals on Saturday.
The “Women In Blue” put up a far better performance, reaching 159 for 5, after putting on a lackluster batting display in the loss to Pakistan. This was partly because of a 96-run opening stand between Shafali and replacement captain Smriti Mandhana (47 off 38 balls).
Jemimah Rodrigues deserves praise as well, as her 35 runs off just 24 balls contributed to the Indian team’s score of almost 160.
After 20 overs, Bangladesh managed to score 100 for 7, but they never seemed to be in contention to win.
With one game remaining in the round-robin stage, India leads the seven-team standings with 8 points after five games.
Bangladesh made an effort, but they had never in their T20I history chased a total higher than 142, and despite a strong Indian bowling attack keeping things close, they were never able to gain the upper hand.
Given that there were no quick runs in store, fielding performance improved on the day after a dismal performance against Pakistan. It was nearly impossible for the hosts to score more than 110 runs in the final 10 overs after they failed to even reach 50 in the opening 10 overs
Bangladesh could temporarily halt scoring after Mandhana and Shafali, who attempted a reverse slog, were bowled, but the in-form Jemimah utilized her cricketing acumen to find the gaps as she and Deepti Sharma scored 29 runs in only 2.3 overs to create a record.
