The Gujarat Giants have released a statement explaining that they were unable to secure medical clearance for their allrounder, Deandra Dottin, in time for the ongoing Women’s Premier League. As a result, they had to replace her with the Australia allrounder, Kim Garth.
Initially, the franchise had stated that Dottin was “recovering from a medical situation”. However, Dottin later tweeted that she was “recovering from nothing but the Holy Ghost anointing.”
In a recent clarification, Giants revealed that they were unable to obtain medical clearance for Dottin before the defined deadline for the season. They also emphasized that such clearances are a requirement for all players participating in the WPL. Giants expressed their regret for not having Dottin on their team, describing her as a world-class player and a valuable addition to their franchise.
Giants had acquired Dottin for INR 60 lakh (US $73,000 approx.) after bidding started for her at a base price of INR 50 lakh. In contrast, Garth had gone unsold at the auction last month. However, she recently shifted to Australia and even signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. Although she was part of the Australia squad that won the T20 World Cup in South Africa, she did not get to play in the tournament.
Garth joined the Giants squad on Friday but did not participate in their opening match against Mumbai Indians, which the Giants lost by 143 runs. Giants expressed their hope to see Dottin return to the field soon and promised to include her in their team in the upcoming seasons, subject to the clearance of her medical report.
