According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to discuss the possibility of adding new teams to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) during a governing council meeting next month. Currently, the PSL comprises six teams, including Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Multan Sultans, and Karachi Kings.
While the PCB has not formally or informally discussed this matter with franchises, the issue is likely to be on the PSL governing council meeting’s agenda next month, the report said.
However, the current financial model does not allow for additional teams until the 10th season of the event. The agreement signed in 2021 includes a new clause 2.12, which states that the PCB can introduce a new franchise team in the PSL only after the tenth edition of the tournament.
Earlier this year, Najam Sethi, the chairman of the PCB Management Committee, had stated that the teams in the PSL could be increased to 10 due to high demand. He expressed his desire to include two more teams in the PSL, stating that it was an eight-team project initially.
Nafisa Kamal, the owner of Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), is also reportedly interested in purchasing a team in the PSL. According to Bangladeshi reporter Fahim Rahman, Nafisa is among the people who are keen on securing one of the franchises in the PSL.
Precisely, the possibility of adding new teams to the PSL is likely to be discussed in the upcoming governing council meeting. However, the current financial model does not allow for additional teams until the 10th season of the event. With high demand and interest from potential buyers, it remains to be seen how the situation develops.
