The Lahore High Court has lifted the stay order on the election for the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), allowing the election process to proceed. Initially scheduled for June 27 at the PCB headquarters in Lahore, the election was postponed due to stay orders issued by multiple courts in the country, including the Balochistan High Court.
The Lahore High Court had stayed the election after suspending the notification of the Board of Governors (BoG) and issued notices to the federal government, the cricket board’s election commissioner, and others.
The stay order was granted in response to a petition filed by Malik Zulifqar, who contended that the chief election commissioner, Shahzad Farooq Rana, had made unauthorized changes to the list of the BoGs, which had been finalized by the interim management committee on June 20. The petition argued that the chief election commissioner’s actions were illegal and requested a stay order, which was granted by the court.
Earlier, the PCB had already postponed the election following a stay order issued by a two-member bench of the Balochistan High Court. Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Amir Nawaz had ordered a halt to the elections until July 17, taking into account the Eid-ul-Adha holidays and the court’s two-week summer vacation. The court will resume hearing arguments on July 17.
With the lifting of the stay order by the Lahore High Court, the PCB chairman election can now proceed as scheduled. This development brings some clarity to the election process, allowing for the selection of the new chairman of the PCB.
