Glenn Maxwell’s unexpected absence from the ODI World Cup match against England in Ahmedabad has raised eyebrows as he suffered a concussion in a bizarre golf-related incident during a scheduled day off. Maxwell was holding onto the back of a golf cart for a short 300-meter ride from the clubhouse to the team bus when he lost his grip, leading to his injury. As a result, he will be following concussion protocols for an estimated six to eight days.
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, acknowledged Maxwell’s honesty in providing information about the incident. McDonald expressed relief that the injury wasn’t more severe and stated that Maxwell would begin light exercises as part of his return-to-play protocol.
“He’s been honest with the information he’s provided,” head coach Andrew McDonald said. “He’s doing fine. He’ll start some light exercises today and we feel as though it will be a reasonably straightforward return-to-play protocol. I suppose the fortunate part was there was no other injury sustained which could have been a lot worse that it currently is.
Maxwell’s absence presents a challenge for Australia, as he’s a key middle-order player and a valuable second spinner alongside Adam Zampa. In Maxwell’s absence, Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green is expected to come into the team, and Marnus Labuschagne is favoured to retain his place in the playing XI. Travis Head will also have to take on a supporting role with the ball.
The incident with Maxwell highlights the risk of golfing injuries in the cricket world. McDonald, however, emphasized that golf should not be banned, as it provides players with a necessary escape from the rigours of cricket.
Labuschagne, who is likely to retain his spot in the XI, may also play a role with the ball. He has featured in all 14 of Australia’s ODIs since the start of September and has been a versatile contributor in the World Cup, batting at various positions in the middle order.
Despite losing their first two matches in the World Cup, Australia is well-positioned to secure a semi-final spot after four consecutive victories. They will face Afghanistan and Bangladesh after the England game to complete the group stage. Maxwell’s absence will undoubtedly be a setback, but Australia remains determined to continue their strong run in the tournament.
