India has made history by becoming the first team to secure a spot in the World Cup 2023 semi-finals, boasting an unbeaten record of 7 wins in 7 matches. Their dominant form has set them apart as the sole undefeated team in this year’s tournament. Their latest victory was a resounding triumph against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, where they triumphed by a massive 302-run margin.
In a remarkable display of power and prowess, India’s bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami, decimated the Sri Lankan batting lineup, echoing their previous victory over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final. The Indian pacers put Sri Lanka on the back foot, with Siraj picking up two wickets in his very first over and Bumrah dismissing Pathum Nissanka with the first ball of the match. The aggressive and fiery performance from Siraj, especially in his fiery exchange with Charith Asalanka, stood out.
Adding to Sri Lanka’s misery, Mohammed Shami, India’s first-change bowler, swiftly removed both Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha in his opening over. Shami, who stepped in as a replacement for the injured Hardik Pandya, continued his excellent form, securing his third five-wicket haul in World Cups and his second in this edition.
The Indian batting order also shone as they posted an impressive 357/8 on the scoreboard. Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88), and Shreyas Iyer (82) led the charge, narrowly missing out on reaching three-figure scores. Dilshan Madushanka was the standout performer for Sri Lanka, taking a five-wicket haul.
With a flawless campaign so far, India have defeated strong opponents like Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka in their first seven matches. They currently top the table with 14 points and are set to face South Africa, who have only suffered one loss in the tournament, in their upcoming match. India’s remarkable journey in the 2023 World Cup continues, with their eyes set on clinching the coveted trophy.
