Zimbabwe Cricket has announced the white-ball squads for the Sri Lanka series which marks the return of Craig Ervine as the captain. He missed the home series against Ireland due to an injury, however, is set to step in his boots once again.
The announcement marks the retention of key players Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Milton Shumba, and Tony Munyonga in the 50-over squad, following their notable performances in the recent series against Ireland. Adding a fresh dimension to the team, uncapped Tapiwa Mufudza has earned a spot after an outstanding display at the Pro50 Championship 2023, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 18 wickets.
In a significant development, Walter Chawaguta has been appointed as the interim coach for the team, stepping in for head coach Dave Houghton, who resigned after the challenging home series against Ireland. Zimbabwe faced setbacks under Houghton’s coaching, failing to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 and missing out on the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024 despite a rigorous campaign in the Africa Region Qualifier.
The ODI series, scheduled for January 6, 8, and 11, provides an opportunity for Zimbabwe to regroup and showcase their capabilities in the 50-over format. Following the ODIs, the team will transition to T20Is on January 14, 16, and 18, presenting a chance for redemption and a platform to display their prowess in the shortest format.
This series against Ireland holds immense significance for Zimbabwe as they aim to assess and enhance their performance under the interim coaching setup.
