Is Jess Jonassen’s career over? Tells Cricket Australia

Jess jonassen's career

The exclusion of seasoned left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen from the Australian squad for the Bangladesh white-ball tour has stirred discussions within the cricketing fraternity. Chief selector Shawn Flegler reassured fans that her omission does not mark the end of Jonassen’s career in the international realm, emphasizing the dynamic nature of squad compositions.

Jonassen, a fixture in the Australian setup since 2012, faced exclusion from the recent home series against South Africa as coach Shelley Nitschke opted for other spin options. Impressive performances from players like Ash Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Alana King influenced the decision, with Flegler highlighting Jonassen’s reduced role in the team due to the development of other players’ skills.

“I think over the last couple of years, particularly over the last 12 months, JJ’s role has not been as strong in the team. That’s probably more to do with players like Ash Gardner having her game develop…and also players like Georgia Wareham with her skill set. Alana King’s form as well over the last 12 to 18 months has been really strong,” Flegler was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

Meanwhile, the tour sees fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck set to make a comeback after a two-year hiatus due to injury, earning her a spot in the 15-player squad. Flegler’s emotional phone call delivering the news left Vlaeminck momentarily speechless, describing the moment as “a bit surreal” after pushing towards her comeback.

“I think I lost the ability to speak for a moment there. It’s something I’ve been pushing towards and it’s given me motivation over the last couple of years. For it to actually happen, it felt a little bit surreal, to be honest,” Vlaeminck said.

As Australia embark on their tour of Bangladesh, the exclusion of Jonassen reflects the team’s evolving strategies and emphasis on player development, while also fostering camaraderie and team spirit crucial for upcoming challenges.
