Shaheen Shah Afridi’s recent performance as both bowler and captain has reportedly put his leadership role in jeopardy with the T20 World Cup 2024 looming large. According to sources from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), a captaincy change is being actively considered ahead of the marquee tournament.
Afridi’s struggles began in the recently concluded PSL 2024. Despite leading the Lahore Qalandars to consecutive PSL titles in the past, his bowling lacked the usual bite. He conceded a significant number of runs (310 runs in 36 overs) with a concerning economy rate (22.14). His captaincy decisions also came under scrutiny as Qalandars could win only one match out of ten.
This underwhelming performance extended to the international arena. In his first T20I series as captain against New Zealand, Pakistan suffered a disappointing 4-1 series defeat. These factors have seemingly prompted the PCB to consider a change in captaincy.
Reports suggest Mohammad Rizwan, the wicket-keeper batsman, is the frontrunner for the role. Rizwan has enjoyed a stellar run of form, leading the Multan Sultans to become the first team to qualify for the PSL 2024 playoffs. His calm demeanour make him a strong contender.
However, Afridi’s supporters point to his past success. They argue that his young age (23) allows room for improvement, and his fiery pace remains an invaluable asset for the team. They also highlight his experience as captain of the Lahore Qalandars, which culminated in two PSL titles.
The final decision rests with the PCB and the national selection committee. The World Cup begins on June 6th, with Pakistan taking on the USA in their opening match. Time is running out, and the PCB needs to carefully evaluate their options. Will Shaheen Afridi be given another chance to prove himself, or will Mohammad Rizwan take the reins and lead Pakistan’s charge for T20 World Cup glory? Only time will tell.
