Kane Williamson and Chris Woakes are confirmed as direct signings for Durban’s Super Giants ahead of SA20 2025. It will be the first time that these cricketing superstars will feature in the inaugural SA20, and many eyebrows are raised in excitement toward the league.

Retentions are now out of the way with the deadline passing yesterday, while teams are finalising their squads, with a deadline of August 31 for direct signings. This means the SA20 2025 tournament will now run from January 9 to February 8, and it is scintillating cricket.

Kane Williamson and Chris Woakes to bolster DSG squad

Williamson announced last month that he was playing in SA20, turning down a central contract with New Zealand for 2024-25, and standing down as captain of the national team. He nonetheless insisted he was committed to playing cricket for New Zealand, missing only a few matches during a three-week window.

“The SA20 looks really exciting, and it’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Williamson said. He is not alone in making this move, as SA20 and ILT20 franchises have been chasing some of the top England Test players, including Ben Stokes and Joe Root. The Paarl Royals recently signed Root, while MI Cape Town has made a huge offer to Stokes.

Chris Woakes, a vital cog in England’s white-ball cricket success stories, including the 2019 ODI and 2022 T20I World Cups, will join Williamson at the Durban’s Super Giants. Woakes was overlooked for last year’s 2024 T20 World Cup, so this new adventure represents an exciting prospect for the seasoned all-rounder.

That’s why the Durban Super Giants, the runners-up in the previous season, will be keen on banking on the experience and skill that their new signings bring to clinch the title this year. There’s never been such a bright prospect looking forward to the match for the team with Williamson and Woakes onboard.
