Bryan Nigel Lennox Charles, a 29-year-old off-spinner from Trinidad, has been added to the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) squad for the CPL 2024 playoffs following Dwayne Bravo’s injury. Bravo’s CPL career was cut short due to a groin injury, and with Sunil Narine also recovering from a quad injury, Charles could play a key role in the spin department, particularly with his ability to exploit turning tracks. Charles, born on June 9, 1995, has experience playing for Trinidad & Tobago and the West Indies U-19s.

Bryan Charles’s stats

Charles made his first-class debut in 2015 for Trinidad & Tobago against Guyana at Providence. Since then, he has taken 150 wickets in 44 first-class matches, with a best bowling performance of 7/43. He has proven his consistency in the domestic circuit, with seven five-wicket hauls, including a standout match in April 2024 against Jamaica where he claimed 6/82 and 7/43. His List A experience is limited, with 7 wickets from 8 matches, but his economy of 4.21 suggests he can offer control in the middle overs.

Charles’ inclusion in TKR’s squad comes at a crucial time, with the team facing several injury setbacks. In TKR’s last home game, captain Kieron Pollard had Tim David bowl off-spin due to Narine’s unavailability, but David too has joined the injury list. Pollard has emphasized the importance of the support staff in managing player fitness as TKR heads into the playoffs. Charles could provide much-needed stability to the bowling attack, especially against teams like Barbados Royals, who feature several left-handers in their lineup.

As TKR prepares for a tough playoff run, Charles’ recent form and experience make him a strong contender for a key role if Narine remains sidelined. His debut match at Providence and his consistent first-class record showcase his capability to deliver under pressure, potentially turning the tides in TKR’s favour during the CPL 2024 playoffs
