New Zealand’s Super Smash has taken T20 cricket engagement to new heights, with record-breaking broadcast viewership, digital interactions, and merchandise sales in the 2024-25 season. As the tournament reaches its climax, fans have been treated to thrilling contests, star-studded lineups, and retro-inspired nostalgia.
Unprecedented Viewership and Digital Reach
Super Smash’s free-to-air coverage on TVNZ+ and DUKE has significantly boosted its nationwide reach, drawing in over one million viewers across New Zealand. The tournament’s social media presence has also skyrocketed, with NZC’s digital content amassing a staggering 7.3 million views since the tournament kicked off in late December.
Retro Kits and Merchandise Frenzy
In a nod to New Zealand’s rich T20 cricket history, teams sported retro-themed playing kits, instantly becoming a fan-favorite. The demand was so intense that 50% of Dynasty’s stock sold out within 24 hours of the launch, demonstrating the deep emotional connection fans have with Super Smash’s legacy.
KFC’s “6s for Surf” Initiative Continues to Make an Impact
Cricket and community spirit came together once again through KFC’s “6s for Surf” campaign, which pledged $100 to Surf Lifesaving NZ for every six hit during the tournament. With 376 sixes already recorded, the total donation has reached at least $37,600, with the final two games set to add even more to the tally.
Star-Studded Lineups Elevate Competition
With an international break for the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS, the Super Smash has been a platform for both rising domestic talents and global cricketing superstars. Local standouts like Melie Kerr, Eden Carson, Rachin Ravindra, and Matt Henry have dominated, while overseas sensations such as Ellyse Perry, Amanda-Jade Wellington, Chamari Athapaththu, Sarah Glenn, and Hollie Armitage have added world-class talent to the tournament.

Reflecting on the tournament’s success, NZC Marketing Executive Emily Anderson highlighted how engaged fans and high-quality cricket have defined Super Smash 2024-25.

With BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS stars available, the competition has been fiercely contested, producing thrilling matches and record engagement.”
Tightest Super Smash Playoff Race in History
With eight teams still in playoff contention before the final round, this has been the closest Super Smash competition on record. The Otago Sparks (Women’s) and Central Stags (Men’s) secured direct entry into the Grand Finals after dominating the league phase with unbeaten 28-point finishes. They will face Wellington Blaze and Canterbury Kings, who secured their spots after impressive playoff victories.
