Just a few days ago, the cricketing world watched in disbelief as a 14-year-old from Bihar launched Shardul Thakur over extra cover for six on his very first IPL delivery. That teenager was Indian cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi — and that shot was only the beginning.
Representing Rajasthan Royals, Suryavanshi didn’t just make a debut; he rewrote records. In only his third IPL match, he became the youngest-ever men’s T20 centurion, hammering a sensational 101 off 38 balls against Gujarat Titans. The century was also the second-fastest in IPL history, and it came against an elite bowling attack featuring Mohammed Siraj, Rashid Khan, and Washington Sundar.
But Vaibhav’s journey wasn’t paved with privilege or world-class academies. It began in the small village of Tajpur in Bihar’s Samastipur district. With no proper facilities, he and his father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, made daily 90-kilometre trips to Patna for training.
“My father quit his job, my elder brother took over the job,” Vaibhav said in a post-match video. “My mother used to wake up at 2am to prepare food for me. We had limited means, but my father backed me to succeed. Whatever you are seeing today, it’s because of my parents.”
Vaibhav’s rise started before the IPL. At just 12 years and 284 days old, he debuted in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar. He made headlines in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, played the Under-19 Quadrangular series, and even scored a triple century in a local tournament. Rajasthan Royals signed him for ₹1.1 crore in the 2024 IPL auction, making him the youngest contracted player of the season.
“I want to thank the Rajasthan Royals who worked on him extensively,” said his father in a video shared by the Bihar Cricket Association. “Coach Rahul Dravid and the entire staff improved his game. He has made Bihar and India proud.”
Indian Cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi IPL Highlights and What’s Next
Fans already call him “Boss Baby” and even liken him to the kid from Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii. The flair, the baby face, the big hits — it’s all part of the charm.
There’s some debate around his real age, but most agree it’s beside the point now. What matters is his potential. Just like Sachin debuted at 16 and stunned the world, Vaibhav might not be far from donning India’s jersey either.
