As cricket fans gear up for another action-packed season, the Lanka Premier League 2025, marking the sixth season of the tournament, is officially scheduled to take place from November 27 to December 23 across Colombo, Kandy, and Dambulla. Shifting away from its traditional July-August window, this year’s edition arrives just months ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, strategically aligning the tournament with preparations for the global event.
The move comes as part of Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) broader effort to synchronise domestic T20 competition with international commitments. Tournament director Samantha Dodanwela explained that the rescheduling is meant to better support player readiness, especially with Sri Lanka co-hosting the World Cup alongside India.
“The idea to conduct the LPL during this time frame is aimed at aligning the tournament with the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2026,”
Sixth Team and Surface Changes in the Spotlight
The buzz around Lanka Premier League 2025 is not just about the new schedule, plans are in motion to add a sixth franchise to the tournament lineup. With existing teams from Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Dambulla, and Jaffna, the addition would be a significant expansion. According to Dodanwela, potential new owners are currently being vetted, although the tournament has faced ownership instability in the past. Earlier this year, Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers lost their spots due to contractual issues, leaving the tournament without any franchise owners dating before 2024.
“Potential owners for a sixth team are currently being vetted,” Dodanwela confirmed.
In another key development, Sri Lanka Cricket is focused on preparing batting-friendly pitches to replicate conditions expected during the T20 World Cup. While Kandy and Dambulla offered high-scoring thrillers last year, Colombo lagged behind due to its sluggish surface. The R Premadasa Stadium is now undergoing relaying work to remedy that issue, with national players like Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva supporting the initiative.
