Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially reiterated that the signing of South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis as a replacement player for the injured Gurjapneet Singh was fully in line with the rules and regulations of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The clarification came after speculation around the high-profile move. CSK underlined that all procedures were conducted transparently and in complete accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically Clause 6.6 concerning replacement players.
Regulations Followed in Signing Brevis
According to IPL rules, a replacement player’s league fee cannot exceed that of the injured or unavailable player. In this case, both Gurjapneet Singh and Brevis were valued at INR 2.2 crore, ensuring compliance. Furthermore, the regulations specify that if a replacement is recruited mid-season, the fee is adjusted to reflect matches already played before the player’s registration.
CSK emphasized that these provisions were strictly adhered to and confirmed that the IPL Governing Council validated the signing through a media advisory dated April 18, 2025.
Dewald Brevis’ Credentials
Brevis, known globally as “Baby AB” for his stroke-making resemblance to AB de Villiers, has been one of South Africa’s brightest young stars.
- He has played 81 T20s, amassing 1,787 runs, including a career-best score of 162.
- At the international level, Brevis made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023, featuring in two matches so far.
- He was previously part of the Mumbai Indians, appearing in 10 IPL matches.
Joining CSK marks a fresh chapter for Brevis, giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent under the franchise’s experienced leadership setup.
CSK’s Statement
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken during the signing of Dewald Brevis were in full compliance with IPL regulations,” the franchise said in its release. “We followed the procedures as per the IPL Player Regulations, and the contract terms were executed in line with established protocols.”
This move strengthens CSK’s middle-order options, with Brevis expected to add firepower and versatility as the team navigates IPL 2025.
