For the first time in the Asia Cup’s 16-edition history, an India–Pakistan final could be on the cards. India need to overcome Bangladesh on Wednesday, while Pakistan must clear the same hurdle tonight to book a place in Dubai’s September 28 finale. Bangladesh’s role, therefore, is decisive: their back-to-back clashes will determine whether cricket’s fiercest rivalry headlines the Asia Cup final for the first time ever.
Pakistan strengthened their case with a commanding five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. Shaheen Afridi’s 3-28 once again gave his side the edge, including a trademark first-over strike, the 21st such instance of his T20 career. Sri Lanka were restricted to 133-8 despite Kamindu Mendis’ fighting 50, leaving Pakistan in prime position for qualification.
Shaheen Shah Afridi Threatens India with Bold Claim
As speculation over a third India–Pakistan clash grows, Shaheen’s words have drawn attention worldwide. Asked whether he expects another showdown with India, he responded bluntly:
“Let India first reach the final. We need to win one more match and then whoever comes in the final we are here to win the Cup.”
Doubling down on his intent, he added:
“We are confident that we will win a third time. We need to play aggressive cricket and that we will do.”
The comments came after Indian captain Suryakumar downplayed the rivalry by calling it “non-existent” due to Pakistan’s repeated defeats. Shaheen refused to be rattled:
“What he said is his opinion. Let them reach the final then we will see them.”
Confidence, Respect, and Rising Standards
Beyond the headlines of Shaheen Shah Afridi threatens India, the left-arm quick struck a balance by stressing respect for all opponents. “We respect all our opponents,” he said, pointing to Bangladesh, who recently beat Pakistan 2-1 in a T20 series at home.
He also highlighted the growing self-belief of a youthful Pakistan outfit:
“We are a young team but we are winning matches and achieving goals. We came here to win the tri-series and we did that. Now we are here to win the Asia Cup and we will win that.”
