The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Stevens Mokgalapa, gave his full support to his home team, the Tshwane Spartans, and to the Mzansi Super League (MSL) 2.0 as both entities set sail towards the second season of the tournament.
Cricket South Africa’s Thamsanqa Mthembu said: “Cricket South Africa is excited to present the second instalment of the Mzansi Super League because we believe that cricket brings people together and is a great panacea towards social cohesion. This competition takes place during schools’ recess and right at the start of the festive season and is, therefore, a great opportunity for sports fans and especially cricket lovers and fans to take time out and enjoy cricket with the family.”
The Executive Mayor received his framed Tshwane Spartans outfit from the team’s Chief Executive, Jacques Faul, and from Cricket South Africa (CSA) at his offices on Wednesday morning.
Also present at Tshwane House was the gold plated MSL 2.0 trophy which was making its visit to the City to kick start a regional trophy tour that will visit Polokwane, Mbombela, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town this month.
The 32-match tournament will run from 8 November to 16 December.
The trophy is designed in a unique flower pattern to resemble the South African national flower, the Protea, which is also the name of the South African national cricket team.
In acknowledging the occasion, Mokgalapa said: “We are greatly honoured to have Tshwane, as the country’s capital city, being the first to receive a visit from both Cricket South Africa and from our home team, who will receive undivided support as we aim to win this trophy this year.
“The framed jersey will be visibly displayed in my office as my and the city’s support for the team for MSL 2.0. With that said, we hope to receive a lot of visitors from outside the province and those visiting the country, who will come through to enjoy some of our milestone sights and great hospitality.”
“We have fantastic players in the likes of AB de Villiers, Lungi Ngidi and Lutho Sipamla that form part of our team, and wish Jacques and the boys all of the best in the tournament.”
Faul added: “We hope to see a lot of local fans supporting this team when we play our home matches at SuperSport Centurion this season. Under the guidance of team coach Mark Boucher, we have a team with a great mix of youth and experience that will certainly do our city proud.”
Tshwane is also referred to as the Jacaranda City, named after the purple flowers that come to full life in this spring period.
The great Tshwane attractions include the National Botanical Gardens in the eastern suburb while the Voortrekker Monument, which lies to the south of the city, is one of the most visited historic sites in the country.
The Zoological Garden offers a variety of wildlife while the Union Buildings, not far from the city centre, is the administrative structure that houses the South African government.
Tickets for all tournament matches will cost from R60 each with more information available on www.mslt20.co.za and on the Ticketpro website (www.ticketpro.co.za) for their different regional outlets across South Africa.
There will be free entry for children under three with a half-price discount for scholars, students and pensioners.
Spartans will open the tournament with a visit to take on Durban Heat at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Saturday, 9 November (12:30pm).
