Aaron Finch likely to retire from T20s after BBL 2024

Australian cricket stalwart Aaron Finch is reportedly considering bringing the curtains down on his illustrious T20 career, with the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL 2024) potentially marking his farewell from the shortest format of the game. Currently representing the Melbourne Renegades, Finch’s last appearance was on December 23 against Hobart Hurricanes, where he contributed 31 runs but was left out in the subsequent game.

Despite the recent lack of playing time, the Renegades franchise may offer Finch farewell matches as a tribute to his incredible T20 journey. The seasoned batsman, who stands as the 7th highest run-scorer in T20 cricket with 11,458 runs in 379 innings and a highest score of 172 against Zimbabwe, has had a remarkable career in the format.

The Renegades are scheduled to play against the Melbourne Stars on January 13 and the Sydney Thunder on January 17. Currently positioned 7th on the points table with just one win, they face an uphill battle to secure a spot in the finals.

Aaron Finch, who led Australia to the T20 World Cup title in 2021, bid farewell to international cricket in February 2023 having stepped down from ODIs in late 2022. Reflecting on his journey in an interview with Channel 7, Finch expressed gratitude for the highs and lows throughout his career.

“There’ve been some real lows but great highs [too], and I’ve loved every bit of the journey,” Finch shared. “No moment can compare to winning the BBL title. That, for me, was very special, and something I’ll remember. I’m really proud to have played at one club for the entirety of my career. The Renegades have been a huge part of my life, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve given me.”

As the BBL progresses, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the potential farewell matches for Aaron Finch, celebrating the impact he has had on T20 cricket both domestically and internationally.
