Adelaide Strikers Re-sign Anesu Mushangwe for Two More Years Ahead of WBBL|10

The Adelaide Strikers have announced the re-signing of versatile leg-spinner Anesu Mushangwe for a further two years, solidifying their squad as they aim for an unprecedented three-peat in the Weber Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Mushangwe, a key figure in last season’s championship run, played a vital role in WBBL|09, where the Strikers clinched the title for the second consecutive time.

Born in Zimbabwe, Mushangwe’s journey from an ‘accidental cricketer’ in Harare to becoming one of the Strikers’ most valuable players has made her a fan favorite. Her performance last season was nothing short of spectacular, as she emerged as the third-highest wicket-taker for the Strikers with 16 wickets. Only her spin twin Amanda-Jade Wellington, who took 23 wickets, and star swing bowler Megan Schutt, with 22 wickets, surpassed her tally.

Mushangwe’s success story is inspiring, and her return is a significant boost to the Strikers as they chase history with a third consecutive title in WBBL|10. “I’m so thrilled to sign a two-year deal with the Strikers and can’t wait to again play in front of our fantastic fans at Karen Rolton and Adelaide Ovals,” Mushangwe expressed. “Being part of last year’s grand final win over Brisbane Heat was the highlight of my playing career, and I firmly believe we have the squad capable of taking the title again.”

In her debut season with the Strikers during WBBL|08, Mushangwe made just one appearance. However, her impact grew exponentially last summer when she played every game for the team. Her contributions were highlighted by an impressive strike rate, taking a wicket every three overs, and an economy rate of just 6.47 runs per over, making her one of the most consistent bowlers in the league. Among the top 10 wicket-takers in the competition, only teammates Wellington, Schutt, and captain Tahlia McGrath had better economy rates.

Strikers head coach Luke Williams, who led the team to back-to-back titles, expressed his delight at Mushangwe’s re-signing. “Anesu performed a crucial role for us last summer, and we’re delighted to have her back in the fold for WBBL|10,” Williams said. “Her ability to bowl with great consistency and control at various stages of the innings—whether at the start, during the Power Play, Power Surge, or in the ‘death’ overs—means we can utilize her effectively in both attacking and defensive roles as the game situation demands.”

The Strikers will begin their title defense in WBBL|10 with a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s grand final against Brisbane Heat. This clash is part of a double-header at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, October 27. The team will also play key home games at Karen Rolton Oval, facing the Melbourne Renegades on November 11 and the Perth Scorchers on November 19 for the Aunty Faith Thomas Trophy during the First Nations Round. Additionally, they will take on the Hobart Hurricanes at Adelaide Oval on November 16 as part of the WBBL’s Stadium Series.

With Mushangwe’s return and the continued presence of star players like Wellington, Schutt, and McGrath, the Adelaide Strikers are well-equipped to make another deep run in the WBBL and possibly secure a historic third consecutive championship.
