The recent clash between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka during the ongoing Asia Cup ignited a storm of controversy. The team led by Hashmatullah Shahidi found themselves entangled in a net run rate (NRR) conundrum, which they claimed they were unaware of. Their defeat, by a mere two runs, while attempting to chase down a formidable 291 in 37.1 overs, spelled their untimely exit from the tournament.

Shortly after the dramatic match’s conclusion, head coach Jonathan Trott openly addressed the NRR issue in a press conference, sparking widespread interest and discussion. Surprisingly, the Asian Cricket Council remained silent on the matter. However, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) did not take this lightly; they promptly submitted a formal complaint to the governing body, questioning the significant NRR calculation discrepancy.

Turning our attention to the match itself, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. Their openers laid a solid foundation, and at number three, Kusal Mendis contributed a commanding 92 runs, setting a challenging target for Afghanistan. Towards the end of their innings, Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana chipped in with 33* and 28 runs, respectively, bolstering the Lankan Lions’ position.

With the ball, the team captained by Dusan Shanaka began impressively, snatching three quick wickets. However, Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi stepped up for Afghanistan, crafting an 80-run partnership that altered the game’s dynamics. Yet, as they eventually succumbed to the opposition, Afghanistan found themselves losing wickets consistently, falling short of victory despite their valiant efforts.

In the wake of these events, the Afghanistan cricket team is set to take a break before their upcoming campaign in the ODI World Cup, scheduled to kick off on October 5. Prior to the grand event, they have planned a series of friendly matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka, followed by their opening clash against Bangladesh. The team’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity have undoubtedly garnered them attention and respect on the international cricket stage.
