In a major boost for Afghanistan cricket, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has solidified its ties with Abu Dhabi, securing a five-year agreement with the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub (ADCSH). Under this partnership, Abu Dhabi will serve as the second home and primary training base for Afghanistan’s national and developmental cricket squads until 2029.
This agreement not only guarantees a stable home for Afghanistan’s age-group teams but also lays the groundwork for hosting senior men’s bilateral series in the UAE in collaboration with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). With international cricket engagements often disrupted due to Afghanistan’s domestic challenges, this move provides a much-needed anchor for the country’s cricketing future.
Strengthening Global Presence
The deal follows extensive discussions between ACB, ADCSH, and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), with all parties emphasizing their shared goal of expanding opportunities for Afghan cricketers. The partnership extends beyond just hosting matches; it encompasses broader support for ACB’s global operations and structured player development programs.
Matt Boucher, CEO of ADCSH, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s growing stature as a global cricket hub. “We’ve been privileged to host Afghanistan’s teams in recent years, and this partnership reinforces our commitment to fostering international cricket talent. Abu Dhabi is proud to be a second home for Afghan cricket.”
ACB CEO Naseeb Khan described this partnership as a “turning point” for Afghanistan’s cricketing journey. He stressed that the world-class facilities in Abu Dhabi would significantly enhance player development, particularly at the junior level, and contribute to long-term success on the global stage.
For years, Afghanistan has struggled to establish a consistent home base due to geopolitical challenges. Instead, they have hosted international matches across different venues, including Dehradun, Lucknow, Greater Noida, and the UAE. Abu Dhabi itself has already been the stage for three of Afghanistan’s Test matches, including their most recent encounter against Ireland in February 2024.
