Cricket enthusiasts in Australia are in for a significant shift in how they consume international cricket, as Amazon Prime Video secures exclusive broadcasting rights for the ICC World Test Championship and ODI World Cup. This four-year partnership grants Amazon Prime Video exclusive broadcasting rights for all men’s and women’s ICC tournaments in Australia, eliminating the traditional free-to-air element that fans were accustomed to.
Previously, Foxtel/Kayo and the Nine Network were the go-to channels for cricket coverage, with Nine Network broadcasting men’s away Ashes series in 2027 and 2031. However, under the new deal, there will be no free-to-air coverage for ICC events. The move has sparked debates about access to iconic sporting events, prompting concerns about equal opportunities for all Australians to enjoy free TV coverage.
Geoff Allardice, ICC boss, expressed excitement about the new partnership, emphasizing the growing interest in ICC events, especially after the recently concluded men’s World Cup. The collaboration between the ICC and Amazon Prime Video is set to kick off with the NZ vs IND series, starting with the men’s Under-19 World Cup in January, followed by the men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.
In addition to the exclusive broadcasting rights, Amazon Prime Video announced the release of a third season of the Test documentary in 2024. This season will cover the closely contested 2023 Ashes series in England, providing cricket fans with an immersive look at the memorable clashes between ‘BazBall’ and the formidable test bowling lineup.
