Afghanistan’s former captain, Asghar Afghan announced his retirement from all three formats. This news was shocking for fans as he announced that the game against Namibia will be his last.
Asghar played six Tests, 114 ODIs, and will play the last match of his career with 75 T20Is. He has scored 4215 runs across all formats and led Afghanistan as a captain in 115 matches. In 2018, he was the first test captain of Afghanistan, for their opening test match against India. Afghan remained victorious in 42 out of 52 games as Aghanistan’s T20I captain.
Asghar holds the record of securing the most number of T20I wins as captain. He overtook MS Dhoni’s record of 41 wins when Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
Afghanistan Cricket Board tweeted:
“Afghanistan’s ex-captain Asghar Afghan who holds the highest winning streak as a captain in T20I surpassing India’s legend MS Dhoni by one extra win decided to bid farewell with all formats of cricket in Afghanistan’s third match against Namibia in T20World Cup.”
“AFC welcomes and respects his decision, expresses gratitudes for his services to the country. It will take a lot of hard work for young Afghan cricketers to fill his shoes,” it added.
Speaking to host broadcaster in innings break,
“I want to give chance to youngsters. I think this is a good opportunity for that. Most people are asking me why now but it’s something I cannot explain,” Asghar Afghan said.
“In the last match, we were hurt too much, and that’s why I decided to retire. There are plenty of memories, it’s difficult for me, but I have to retire,” He added.
Afghanistan’s former skipper, Asghar Afghan received a guard of honor from the Namibia team in his farewell match. The 33-year-old scored 31 runs off 23-ball in his last innings for Afghanistan. Afghanistan beat Namibia by 62 runs to register their second win in the tournament
