Azam Khan, the hard-hitter of Pakistan cricket team, came under criticism for his poor performance during the T20I series against Afghanistan. Despite being the talk of the town during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 8, where he scored 282 runs in 10 matches for Islamabad United, Azam failed to replicate his form in the national squad. He scored just one run in two matches and was also criticized for his poor reflexes behind the stumps. However, Azam Khan’s weight has been the major concern nowadays.
The criticism did not stop there as fans and former cricketers questioned his fitness, especially his weight. Azam’s weight-related issues have been a subject of discussion for a long time. However, his trainer Shehzar Mohammad defended him by saying that it is unfair to criticize him solely on his weight.
According to Shehzar, who himself is a first-class cricketer and belongs to the Mohammad family of Pakistan cricket, Azam Khan’s weight falls under the heavyweight category, which helps him generate power. Shehzar also mentioned that Azam lost over 30kgs under his supervision a couple of years ago, and his new look showed the hard work he put in.
While Azam needs to work on his fitness, Shehzar highlighted that weight loss could affect his power. He urged people not to judge Azam based on two bad performances and give him space to succeed. Shehzar pointed out that Azam has the best strike rate against top spinners in the world and has the potential to win matches.
Despite making his T20I debut in 2021 against England and only playing five T20Is for Pakistan, Azam has played 112 T20 matches and scored 2245 runs at an average of 24.40 and a strike rate of 142.44.
Azam Khan’s weight and fitness have been the subject of debate for a long time. However, his trainer Shehzar Mohammad defended him, stating that his weight helps him generate power, and weight loss could affect his performance.
