The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating a change in T20I leadership ahead of the crucial series against New Zealand and England, as well as the T20 World Cup 2024. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s debut as captain saw Pakistan suffer a dismal 4-1 loss to New Zealand, compounded by Lahore Qalandars’ underwhelming performance in the PSL 2024, raising doubts about his leadership.

Reports suggest that Babar Azam, who previously led the team before stepping down amid controversy, might reclaim the captaincy. Despite his past tenure ending under strained circumstances, the PCB’s new management appears inclined to reinstate him, considering his experience and batting prowess.

With no immediate ODI commitments, focus remains on T20Is, with Shaheen’s fate likely to be decided post the Kakul Camp, where the team is currently training for the upcoming series against New Zealand. However, Azam’s hesitance to reassume the role hints at underlying concerns, potentially stemming from his previous tumultuous tenure.

The situation is further complicated by the return of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, both of whom have had public disagreements with Azam in the past. Their reintegration into the team, especially under Azam’s potential leadership, adds an intriguing dynamic to Pakistan cricket’s unfolding narrative as they prepare for the T20 World Cup.
