In a heartfelt gesture of sportsmanship, Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam extended an apology to teammate Saim Ayub during their match against Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing PSL 9. The apology came after Saim was run out at a crucial juncture of the game due to Babar’s miscommunication. Despite his 68-run contribution, Babar acknowledged his mistake, revealing that he sought forgiveness from Saim.
The match, held on February 18, saw Quetta Gladiators emerging victorious by 16 runs after posting a formidable total of 206/5 batting first. Jason Roy’s explosive 75 and Saud Shakeel’s resilient 74 propelled Gladiators to a commanding position. In response, Babar Azam’s valiant 68 kept Zalmi in the chase. However, Saim’s untimely run-out on 42 off 26 deliveries disrupted Zalmi’s momentum. The partnership between Babar and Saim, inching towards the century mark, was cut short by a communication misunderstanding, ultimately costing Saim his wicket.
With Zalmi cruising at 91-1 in 8.4 overs, the rest of the batting lineup faltered, managing only 190/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Reflecting on the pivotal moment, Babar Azam admitted in the post-match conference, “The run-out was the turning point. We were building a good partnership and looking to take the partnership long into the innings. Unfortunately, it was my mistake, and I’ve said sorry to Saim.”
Babar’s humility and accountability exemplify the spirit of cricket, where camaraderie and respect for teammates transcend the outcomes of the game. As PSL 9 unfolds, Zalmi will look to bounce back from this setback, with Babar’s leadership guiding them towards future success.
