Bangladesh’s campaign in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa has been hit by a spot-fixing scandal after allegations were made that a cricketer from their team was approached by another player. The alleged conversation between two female cricketers was carried by Dhaka-based Jamuna TV, which has claimed that one of them is currently with the Bangladesh squad in South Africa.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that they are aware of the allegations and expects the player in question to report the matter to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). The BCB’s chief executive, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, said that it is not a matter for the board to investigate and that the players are aware of their obligations to inform the ACU under the event’s protocol.

Jamuna TV reported that the alleged conversation took place between an intermediary in Bangladesh and a member of the T20 World Cup squad in South Africa. The intermediary is said to have offered the player in South Africa the opportunity to choose which match to play and to offer the match to the fixers if she wished.

The ICC has not offered a comment on the matter. Bangladesh has lost its first two games in Group 1 to Sri Lanka and Australia and faces New Zealand in their next match in Cape Town on February 17.
