England pace bowler Tom Curran, presently representing Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), is facing a four-match ban following a level-3 offence under Cricket Australia’s code of conduct for allegedly intimidating an umpire.

The incident occurred during pre-match drills before the Sixers’ game against Hobart Hurricanes on December 11 when Curran, attempting a practice run-up on the pitch, clashed with the fourth umpire who gestured for him to move away.

In response, Curran gestured for the umpire to step aside and proceeded with a practice run-up toward him, prompting the umpire to evade a potential collision by stepping to his right.

Charged under article 2.17 of the code of conduct for intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire, Curran contested the charge but was found guilty by match referee Bob Parry. He has been handed four suspension points, leading to his absence from four upcoming BBL games.

“The umpire took position next to the stumps, blocking Curran from approaching the pitch and gestured to Curran to move away from the pitch,” a CA statement read. “Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the umpire to move away from the pitch. Curran then attempted to perform a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran. The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision.”

Sydney Sixers express their intent to “vigorously appeal” the sanction, rejecting the charge and maintaining that Curran did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official.

The club’s decision to appeal, backed by legal advice, underscores its commitment to contesting the verdict. Rachael Haynes, the Head of Sixers, voices support for Curran, anticipating his return to the field. The outcome of the appeal will determine the final resolution of the ban, impacting Curran’s participation in future BBL matches and emphasizing the significance of maintaining discipline in cricket.

“Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision,” Head of Sixers Rachael Haynes said. “We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field.”
