BCCI looking for caravan model for WPL season 2

BCCI looking to adopt caravan model for WPL 2024

In a bid to enhance the Women’s Premier League (WPL) experience, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating a unique caravan model for the upcoming WPL Season 2. The inaugural season, held in Mumbai, saw Mumbai Indians Women emerge victorious.

Now, the cricketing board is eyeing a multi-city approach, with the first leg scheduled to kick off at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and the second leg, including playoffs and the final, slated for Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This innovative concept aims to bring the excitement of premier women’s cricket to different corners of the country.

According to reports from Cricbuzz, the proposed dates for WPL 2024 are from February 22nd to March 17th. The tournament is set to feature five teams, with the Mumbai Indians Women looking to defend their title. WPL, originally named Women’s Indian Premier League, was the brainchild of former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. The league adopts a double round-robin format, ensuring each team faces every other team twice. The top three teams with the highest points proceed to the playoffs, culminating in an intense final.

During the first season, all matches took place at Barbourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. However, the BCCI faced venue challenges, initially planning for two venues in the debut season, but eventually settling for Mumbai due to logistical constraints. For Season 2, Delhi and Bengaluru have been chosen as the prime locations, offering diverse settings for cricket enthusiasts to witness the thrilling clashes of WPL.

What is a caravan model?

The caravan model, a concept gaining traction in sports, involves the league moving from one city to another during the course of the tournament. This dynamic approach not only broadens the reach of the league but also allows fans from different regions to witness live matches. The idea is to create a traveling spectacle, akin to a caravan, with each leg of the tournament adding a new layer of excitement and engagement for cricket aficionados.

As the BCCI explores this innovative model, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the official confirmation of the caravan-style Women’s Premier League Season 2, set to captivate audiences across Bengaluru and Delhi.
