India recently complained that its cricketers don’t like to wear jerseys printed with the word “Pakistan,” , the host country for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, the event will be played in a hybrid format where matches are being played both in Pakistan and Dubai. India’s games have already been fixed for Dubai. But despite these political differences between the two countries, the match would take place with the official hosting by Pakistan.
A senior Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official accused the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of “bringing politics into cricket,” citing their refusal to send Team India to Pakistan, boycott of the captains’ meet, and now their reported objection to Pakistan’s name on the jerseys.
“BCCI is bringing politics into cricket, which is not good for the game. They’ve refused to send their team to Pakistan, won’t allow their captain to attend the opening ceremony, and now they’re objecting to the host nation’s name on the jerseys,” said the PCB official, speaking to IANS on condition of anonymity.
Tensions Cloud the ICC Champions Trophy
The tiff arises from the cricketing relations already strained between the two countries. Earlier, the BCCI had flatly refused to play cricket matches in Pakistan, compelling the ICC and PCB to follow a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. Though the PCB had agreed to India’s conditions, it now fears that this dispute may compromise future ICC events.
The BCCI is yet to react officially on the allegations regarding the jerseys. The PCB, however, is urging the ICC to take a step and is hopeful that the governing body will be supporting Pakistan’s view.
Political tension between India and Pakistan in these last weeks leading up to the tournament threaten to overshadow the sporting spectacle and create uncertainty for both fans and players.
