The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) extended a warm invitation to officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to attend the Asia Cup 2023 matches hosted by Pakistan. In response, BCCI President Roger Binny and Board Vice President Rajeev Shukla embarked on a brief visit to Pakistan, marking a significant step in cricket diplomacy between the neighbouring nations.
Upon their return to India, both officials shared their experiences and praise for Pakistan’s hospitality. They highlighted the potential of cricket to bridge the divide between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of sports in fostering goodwill and understanding.
“We had a very productive visit to Pakistan. The hospitality extended to us was remarkable. They took excellent care of us, ensuring our comfort throughout the trip. While the primary purpose was to watch cricket and engage in discussions, it turned out to be a very positive journey. Pakistan went above and beyond to make us feel at home,” Binny commented.
When questioned about the possibility of resuming bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan, Binny clarified that the decision lies with the government authorities, as it is a matter of national interest. He expressed optimism, especially with the upcoming ODI World Cup and Pakistan’s scheduled visit to India.
“BCCI cannot make the final decision on this matter. It’s a government issue, and they will have to make the call. We remain hopeful that it will happen, particularly with the ODI World Cup on the horizon, and Pakistan’s team visiting India,” he added.
Shukla echoed Binny’s sentiments, lauding the PCB for its exceptional hospitality and emphasizing the positive atmosphere during their visit. He highlighted the role of cricket as a unifying force, recalling the 2004 tour between the two countries that resulted in enhanced friendship and trade relations.
“The meeting was highly productive, and the Pakistan Cricket Board went to great lengths to ensure our well-being. Security measures were exemplary, and all arrangements were top-notch. It was a goodwill visit centred around cricket, and it was a resounding success,” Shukla remarked.
Furthermore, Shukla acknowledged the close ties between the BCCI and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), citing ACC President Jay Shah’s role as BCCI secretary. This visit also served as a testament to BCCI’s strong relations with ACC members, including Sri Lanka.
In closing, Shukla reaffirmed the belief that cricket serves as a potent medium for restoring peace between neighbouring nations. He cited the positive atmosphere and camaraderie that emerged during past cricketing events, underscoring the potential of the sport to foster goodwill and strengthen diplomatic ties.
