The Melbourne Stars have made a significant statement ahead of the BBL|14 season by selecting England’s Ben Duckett as their first-ever No. 1 pick in the Big Bash League Overseas Player Draft. Duckett, a left-handed opening batter, has been in exceptional form, most recently starring in The Hundred, where he scored 269 runs in just 7 innings at a remarkable strike rate of over 171. His explosive batting at the top of the order will add firepower to the Stars’ lineup. Duckett is no stranger to the Big Bash, having previously played with the Brisbane Heat, and his experience in Australian conditions will be invaluable.

The Stars also secured the services of Tom Curran at Pick 9, following a pre-selection that will see the English all-rounder make his debut for the club this season. Curran, who signed a two-year deal, brings a wealth of BBL experience, having played previously for the Sydney Sixers. Known for his ability to bowl effectively at both ends of the innings, Curran has also developed into a dangerous lower-order batter, making him a key asset for the Stars.

With their final selection in the draft, the Stars opted for Pakistani leg-spinner Usama Mir at Pick 24. Mir returns to the Stars after making his debut in BBL|13, where he made a strong impression by taking 5 wickets and maintaining an economy rate of 6 or under in three of the five innings he bowled. His return will bolster the Stars’ spin department, providing crucial depth and versatility.
