Canada, a debutant of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, have defeated Ireland, a test nation, to triumph its first victory at the World Cup 2024.
The match was played in New York where Ireland had won the toss and elected to field first.
Canada made 137/7 on the board in the first inning of the match. Nicholas Kirton who batted at 140.00 strike rate missed his half-century by a run as he made 49 off 35 balls. Wicketkeeper batsman Shreyas Movva made 37 off 36 to provide a good support to Canada at the last. A partnership of 75 runs off 63 balls was made between NR Kirton and S Movaa for the fifth wicket.
Craig Young and Barry McCarthy took two wickets each for Ireland with Mark Adair and Gareth Delany taking a wicket each.
Ireland who was chasing the score had an opening partnership of 26 off 34 balls. Ireland did not get a sustainable partnership unless the eight-wicket partnership of 62 runs off 41 balls came. The solid partnership was not enough to take Ireland home as they ended at 125/7 on the board in the second inning of the match.
Jeremy Gordon and Dilon Heyliger took two wickets each for Canada with Junaid Siddiqui and Saad Bin Zafar taking a wicket each.
This is the second match of Canada in the World Cup. They played with USA in the first match.
