Hampshire’s star pace bowler, Chris Wood, has been appointed captain of the Hampshire Hawks for the upcoming inaugural Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana. Wood, the club’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20s, brings vast experience to the role. With 191 wickets to his name, he stands as the fourth-highest wicket-taker in Vitality Blast history.
Wood’s appointment comes as regular captain, James Vince, is unavailable due to his commitment to the Abu Dhabi T10 competition, running concurrently with the GSL from November 21 to December 2. This means Wood will take on the responsibility of leading the Hawks in the prestigious tournament.
“It’s a great privilege to captain Hampshire in the Global Super League,” said Wood, reflecting on his excitement to lead the team. “I’ve had a taste of it before, and I’m really looking forward to captaining the side in Guyana.”
Wood’s cricketing journey with Hampshire began in 2010 when he made his T20 debut against Kent. Since then, he has proven himself as a crucial player for the club, collecting five white-ball trophies, including three T20 titles in 2010, 2012, and 2022. His consistency with the ball has been key, particularly over the past three years, where he has taken 48 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.88 in the Vitality Blast.
Wood, 33, extended his contract with Hampshire earlier this year, ensuring he will remain at the club until at least the end of 2025. He was also awarded a testimonial year in 2024 for his outstanding contribution to the team.
The Hampshire Hawks squad for the GSL will be announced soon, with the team set to take on rivals including Rangpur Riders, Lahore Qalandars, and Guyana Amazon Warriors in the tournament. The first match of their campaign will be on November 27 against Rangpur Riders at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.
The Global Super League promises to be an exciting new chapter in T20 cricket, with the final set to take place on December 7.
