Veteran Indian batsman Dinesh Karthik has fueled speculation about his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the conclusion of the ongoing 17th edition. The signs emerged following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 22nd.
Karthik played a crucial knock of 38 not out off 26 deliveries, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory for RCB. Chasing a modest total of 174, CSK comfortably chased it down in 18.4 overs, winning by six wickets.
Intriguingly, during the post-match press conference, Karthik hinted at his potential farewell at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He expressed optimism about RCB’s playoff chances, hinting at a possible return for the playoffs as his “last” appearance at the venue.
“That’s a great question,” Karthik said. “I genuinely wish it’s not (my last match here) because a couple of matches of the Playoffs could be here. If I come back for that, that could be the last. Otherwise, I think it could be,” he added, leaving his future open-ended.
This cryptic statement suggests that yesterday’s match against CSK could be Karthik’s final appearance at the stadium if RCB fails to qualify for the playoffs. However, a successful playoff run for Faf du Plessis’ team could see him return “for the last time” in the IPL in this stadium. This implies that IPL 2024 could very well be his final season.
Earlier this month, reports emerged from a reliable BCCI source suggesting that “This 2024 edition will be his (Dinesh Karthik’s) last IPL.” These reports further hinted at Karthik’s potential international retirement soon after the IPL, with a possible transition to the commentary box.
