Despite facing some heavy losses, including a world-record ODI defeat against England in June of the previous year, the Dutch cricket team has remarkably secured qualification for the upcoming tournament in India. Their qualification came on the back of impressive victories against Scotland, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies.
Addressing the perception of the Dutch team as underdogs, their coach, South African Ryan Cook, emphasized that they refuse to be labeled as “cricket minions.” Cook believes that such labels limit their potential and mindset. Instead, the team sees themselves as a cricketing nation capable of playing a competitive and stylish brand of cricket against some of the world’s best teams.
With their sights set on the World Cup, Cook expressed their determination to secure the necessary victories and progress to the semi-finals. The Dutch team, led by captain Scott Edwards, boasts a roster featuring hard-hitters like Bas de Leede and Max O’Dowd, as well as a well-rounded bowling attack with names like Paul van Meekeren and Logan van Beek. Additionally, experienced campaigners Roelof van der Merwe and Colin Ackermann add depth to the squad.
A notable inclusion in the squad is South African-born Sybrand Engelbrecht, who recently became eligible to represent the Netherlands. His presence could be a game-changer for the team. The Dutch team also has exciting young talents, including 20-year-old spinners Shariz Ahmed and Aryan Dutt, who are expected to play pivotal roles on India’s spin-friendly pitches. Opener Vikram Singh, who honed his skills in south Asia during the off-season, brings valuable experience to the squad.
Speaking of their advantage, Singh acknowledged that training in south Asia has provided them with valuable insights into subcontinental conditions, potentially giving them an edge in the tournament.
The Dutch team will embark on an eight-day training camp in Bengaluru, commencing on September 18. During this camp, they will face Karnataka in two practice matches before their tournament opener against Pakistan on October 6.
The last time the Dutch team participated in a World Cup was in 2011, where they faced strong challenges and memorable moments, including standout performances by Ryan ten Doeschate. This time, they enter the tournament with renewed determination and ambition, eager to make their mark on the global stage.
