England on Tuesday announced a 15-player squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which includes some fresh faces and young guns including Freya Kemp and Bess Heath. Notably, the extravaganza is set to be held in the UAE this October. Danielle Gibson’s selection is another expected inclusion as her first World Cup for the consistent performances she puts in.
But it wasn’t all about the expected names either, as some surprises also marked the squad announcement. Like, for example, fast bowler Lauren Filer, who had been part of the ODI squad for the Ireland series, did not make the cut into the World Cup squad. She will be on England’s move to Abu Dhabi to join the team’s training camp but won’t figure in the squad for the tournament.
The squad for the T20 World Cup is made up of a mixture of experience and youth. Sophie Dunkley has retained her place after an impressive comeback over the summer. The recent captain of Welsh Fire in The Hundred final, Tammy Beaumont, gets included for Ireland but misses out on the T20 World Cup folio.
The tour, to be captained by Kate Cross, will represent an important preparation phase for the team, while seven uncapped players have been included and may win international caps. The tour includes three ODIs and two T20Is, which is good match practice ahead of the World Cup.
