The most notable player in England’s side for the inaugural Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, which takes place in January, is Sophia Smale, who played The Hundred for Oval Invincibles.

The left-arm spinner is only one of several athletes who have distinguished themselves on the domestic circuit since it underwent regional reformatting before the 2020 season.

Alexa Stonehouse, a left-arm seamer who has excelled for South East Stars this season after making an appearance for England A earlier in the year, and Grace Scrivens, an accomplished all-rounder who was a key component of London Spirit’s performance in The Hundred.

The Northern Diamonds team that won the Heyhoe Flint Trophy included Emma Marlow and Lizzie Scott, and Josie Groves was the second-youngest player (after Smale) to reach 50 in the competition in 2022. The youngest player on the team is Davina Perrin, a member of the ACE Elite Program. At only 15, she was selected by Birmingham Phoenix for The Hundred this summer, but she didn’t play.

The chairman of the selection panel, Richard Bedbrook, head of England Women performance pathways, remarked that it was “hugely thrilling” to identify the team and consider the players’ future opportunities.

He formerly served as the South East Stars’ director of cricket, where he monitored Alice Capsey’s growth. Despite being still be eligible for selection, she is not present.

The Cricketer is aware that it was decided there is too much senior cricket to be played for Capsey to return to an age-group competition, as has frequently been the case in the equivalent men’s tournament. The same is true for Freya Kemp, who became the second-youngest player to score an international fifty for England Women in September. Capsey is presently representing Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash.
