Adelaide Strikers have secured a major coup by signing England’s Test captain, Ollie Pope, ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. The innovative right-handed batter and skilled wicketkeeper is the latest pre-draft signing for the Strikers, adding considerable depth and experience to their squad for BBL|14.

Pope’s journey in T20 cricket began in 2017 with Surrey during the NatWest T20 Blast. His creative stroke play and adaptability quickly earned him recognition, leading to his Test debut for England against India in the summer of 2018. Since then, Pope has become a prominent figure in English cricket, known for his technical finesse and ability to perform under pressure.

In 2019, Pope’s growing reputation was cemented when he was called up for England’s tours of New Zealand and South Africa. It was during the South Africa tour, in Port Elizabeth, that Pope made headlines by scoring his maiden Test century, guiding England to a memorable victory. At the time, he became England’s youngest centurion since the legendary Alastair Cook.

Beyond his Test credentials, Pope has also made a mark in the T20 format. With 1,295 runs in 60 matches and an impressive strike rate of 133, he brings a wealth of experience to the Strikers’ lineup. His addition is expected to bolster an already strong batting unit that includes big-hitters like D’Arcy Short, Matt Short, and Chris Lynn.

Reflecting on his signing, Pope expressed his excitement about joining the Strikers. “Signing with the Adelaide Strikers is an incredible opportunity for me. I’ve been watching the Big Bash since I was a kid, and it’s always been a competition I’ve been eager to be a part of. Adelaide is such a fantastic city with a vibrant cricket culture, and the Adelaide Oval is one of the most iconic grounds in the world,” said Pope.

He added, “I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the passionate Strikers fans and being part of a team with such a strong reputation. The chance to rub shoulders with some incredible players and contribute to the team’s success is something I’m truly excited about. I can’t wait to get started!”

Adelaide Strikers Head Coach Tim Paine also expressed his enthusiasm about Pope’s inclusion. “Ollie Pope is an exceptional talent with a proven track record at the highest level. His dynamic batting style and wicket-keeping abilities are a fantastic addition to our squad. We’re thrilled to have him on board and believe he will be a key player for us this season. His experience and leadership will undoubtedly elevate our team.”

The BBL Draft is scheduled for Sunday, September 1, and will be broadcast live across The Seven Network, 7plus, Fox Sports, and Kayo Sports.

The Adelaide Strikers will kick off their season against Sydney Thunder in Canberra on December 17, followed by exciting home games at the Adelaide Oval against the Melbourne Stars on December 20, Hobart Hurricanes on December 27, Perth Scorchers on New Year’s Eve, Brisbane Heat on January 11, and Sydney Sixers on January 15. With the addition of Pope, the Strikers are well-poised for a thrilling BBL campaign.
