The fate of the Champions Trophy remains uncertain as the ICC deals with complex issues surrounding the event. A crucial meeting is expected in the coming days, but its date is yet to be confirmed. Speculation is rife that there might be a virtual board meeting on December 5, but the agenda is still unclear.
This could be the first session officially presided over by Jay Shah, the newly appointed ICC chairman, who took charge on December 1. Shah’s tenure, described as a “new chapter in global cricket,” began amidst unresolved tensions, including the uncertainty over the Champions Trophy. Insiders believe that this introductory meeting may touch upon key issues, but there is still no clarity regarding the fate of the tournament.
Recent talks between the BCCI and the PCB added a layer of complexity. The country hosting the event is, in this case, Pakistan. The host might accept the hybrid hosting model with certain conditions. The proposed “Partnership Formula” by the PCB could further force India to opt for similar hybrid deals for the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026. The uncertainty over the Champions Trophy is deepened since no consensus has been achieved, and the BCCI would have to seek clearance from the Indian government, which has always been hard on Pakistan.
Meanwhile, a separate ICC workshop for global broadcasters is scheduled for December 5 in Dubai. While primarily an annual event, it coincides with the uncertainty over the Champions Trophy, fueling speculation about potential updates. The workshop will host major media partners, including Jio Star from India, amid continued anticipation over the tournament’s future.
The ICC is facing increasing pressure to end uncertainty over the Champions Trophy, now the most important event of the cricketing calendar, while no decisions are in place.
