Hampshire has made a significant addition to their squad by signing South African teenage sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius for the 2025 T20 Blast. The 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who has been making waves in T20 cricket, will make his debut in English domestic cricket next year.
Pretorius: A Star in the Making
Dre Pretorius has been one of the most talked-about young talents in world cricket. His breakthrough performance came during the 2024 SA20, where he played for Paarl Royals and immediately made an impact. In his very first match, he smashed an explosive 97-run knock, partnering with England legend Joe Root.
That innings was just the beginning, as Pretorius went on to become the leading run-scorer of the tournament, amassing 397 runs at a blistering strike rate of 166.80. Interestingly, the coach on the receiving end of Pretorius’ remarkable debut was Adi Birrell, who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20. Now, as Hampshire’s head coach, Birrell has moved swiftly to bring the young star into the fold for the Vitality Blast 2025.
“We saw firsthand what Dre is capable of in SA20. His ability to dominate top-class bowlers at such a young age is exceptional. We believe he has the potential to be a game-changer for Hampshire,” said Birrell.

Pretorius is thrilled about his first stint in English domestic cricket and is eager to contribute to Hampshire’s T20 campaign.
“It’s a real honor to play for Hampshire Hawks in the Vitality Blast as my first experience of playing in England,” Pretorius said.

The young batter will join a squad that has been a dominant force in English T20 cricket, having won the T20 Blast title three times. His aggressive batting style and ability to accelerate the innings will add firepower to Hampshire’s top order.
