David Warner’s participation in Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year is not on the cards after he has already marked the end of an illustrious career with Australia. Warner had expressed willingness to participate in the tournament despite announcing his international retirement after last year’s ODI World Cup, which he had previously stated would be his final appearance in the format. Following the recent T20 World Cup, Warner reiterated his retirement stance in a social media post, confirming the end of his career with Australia.
George Bailey, Australia’s national selector, confirmed Warner’s status as fully retired and emphasized that Warner’s legacy as an all-format player should be appreciated. Bailey commended Warner for his incredible career across all three formats and clarified that Warner would not be part of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Bailey also suggested that Warner might have been joking about playing in the Champions Trophy, further highlighting Warner’s significant contributions to Australian cricket.

“Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats,” Bailey said. “Certainly, our planning is that he won’t be there in Pakistan.
“You never know when Bull’s joking…think he’s just stirring the pot a bit. He’s had a wonderful career, can’t celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia and we reflect back on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow. But as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it’s going to be exciting.”
As Australia announced their squad for the upcoming white-ball tour to the United Kingdom in September, notable omissions included Pat Cummins, Australia’s ODI skipper. Australia is set to play ODI and T20I matches against England, and T20I matches against Scotland in September.
The squad features new talents like Jake Fraser-McGurk, named in both the ODI and T20I squads, seen as a long-term replacement for Warner. Fraser-McGurk has previously played two ODIs on home soil against West Indies and was part of the T20 World Cup squad as a traveling reserve.
Cooper Connolly also received his maiden call-up after an impressive Big Bash League season, scoring 150 runs at a strike rate of 144 while batting at number six for Perth Scorchers.
Australia’s ODI squad for the UK tour includes Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis (wk), Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Adam Zampa.
The T20I squad includes Marsh as captain, alongside Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Spencer Johnson, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa.
