Heather Knight has been named captain of the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Weber WBBL|09 season.
This is the second time Knight will captain the Thunder, having previously led the team to victory in WBBL|06.
Thunder Head Coach, Lisa Keightley, said that Knight is the “perfect fit” to lead the team into the club’s new era.
“She’s one of the most gutsy and determined individuals I’ve worked with and I’m excited to see the effect she’ll have on the group. Her positive energy will be a great asset to an already strong side,” Keightley said.
Knight will be joined by a number of other international stars at the Thunder, including South African superstar Marizanne Kapp and her own international opening bowler Lauren Bell.
The overseas contingent will be backed up by a host of exciting young domestic players including Claire Moore and Paris Bowlder, who both featured in the U19s World Cup for Australia earlier this year.
Knight will also be managing Thunder and Australia’s own emerging star, Phoebe Litchfield, who equaled the fastest ever 50 in T20I women’s cricket against the West Indies earlier this week.
Knight said that she is excited to be back at the Thunder and is looking forward to leading the team to success in WBBL|09.
“I’m really excited to be back at the Thunder and to be leading the team this summer,” Knight said.
“We have a great squad with a lot of talent and experience, and I’m confident that we can challenge for the title.”
The Thunder will begin their WBBL|09 campaign against rivals the Sydney Sixers in the Sydney Smash at North Sydney Oval on Sunday, October 22.
