Hilton Moreeng bids farewell

After an illustrious 11-year tenure, Hilton Moreeng bids farewell as the coach of the South Africa Women’s cricket team. Appointed in 2013, Moreeng played a pivotal role in steering the team through a transformative phase towards professionalism.

Under his guidance, South Africa achieved significant milestones, including reaching two ODI World Cup semi-finals and two T20 World Cup semi-finals. The pinnacle of their journey came in 2023 when the South Africa Women’s team reached their first-ever World Cup final, a testament to Moreeng’s strategic leadership and coaching prowess.

As Moreeng steps down, Dillon du Preez, a former first-class cricketer and Moreeng’s assistant, steps in as the interim coach for South Africa’s upcoming tour of India. Following this tour, Cricket South Africa (CSA) will commence the search for a new head coach to lead the team into the future.

Expressing his gratitude, Moreeng thanked players, team management, fans, and the media for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. Meanwhile, CSA has appointed Baakier Adams as the new batting coach and Bongani Ndaba as the fielding coach, signaling a fresh chapter in the team’s coaching staff.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to lead such a talented group of athletes over the years,” Moreeng said in a statement. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to all the players and team management who have been instrumental in this journey. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside each of you.

“I would also like to thank the South African fans and the media for their unwavering support throughout this journey. Your encouragement has been a constant source of motivation.”

Renewing his contract in July 2020 and receiving another extension earlier this year, Moreeng leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and excellence. As South Africa Women’s cricket embarks on a new era, Moreeng’s contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
