The Hundred Women’s Competition 2024 Match 1 witnessed Oval Invincibles Women recording a convincing 45-run win over Birmingham Phoenix at The Oval on July 23. Invincibles, after being asked to bat first, posted a strong total of 150/5 in their 100 balls.

She did something fantastic; Paige Scholfield made 71 runs in 40 balls and was adjudged Player of the Match for her performance. Power play from Scholfield, with the required 52 by Alice Capsey off 40 balls, laid a strong foundation for the Invincibles. With the falling of early wickets, the partnership of the duo secured the team to reach a competitive total.

Birmingham Phoenix never really got going in the chase, crawling to 105 in 92 balls. Marizanne Kapp struck with the early wicket of Suzie Bates, who fell for 6. Sterre Kalis did produce a brief spark with 17 runs off 12 balls, but otherwise, Phoenix found it difficult to knit partnerships together. Their captain, Ellyse Perry, was run out without scoring, thereby compounding their troubles.

The Invincibles’ bowlers bowled tight lines; Amanda-Jade Wellington led the attack with 3 wickets for just 9 runs. Mady Villiers did enough support with 2 wickets, while Sophia Smale and Ryana MacDonald-Gay chipped in with a wicket each. The Phoenix batsmen could hardly deal with the disciplined bowling combined with razor-sharp fielding and were, in the end, outclassed by 45 runs short of the target.

Levelled at the historic Kennington Oval, the match displayed glimpses of brilliant individual performances and proved the tactical ability of the Invincibles. Their total of 150/5 was set on the base of aggressive batting and clever running between the wickets.

The Phoenix bowlers, particularly Emily Arlott with 2 wickets, did their best to stem the flow of runs as much as possible, but the onslaught by both Scholfield and Capsey was too strong. Their bowling attack, led by Wellington, capitalized on this pressure, making regular inroads, never allowing the Phoenix to settle into their innings. This emphatic win sets the tone in earnest for the Invincibles as they get underway with their campaign in The Hundred 2024.
