Indian Star Smriti Mandhana Signs with Adelaide Strikers for WBBL|10 Season

Indian cricket sensation Smriti Mandhana has officially joined the Adelaide Strikers for the upcoming WBBL|10 season, marking a significant move in women’s cricket. Mandhana, recognized as one of the sport’s top talents, adds her exceptional skills to a Strikers squad that’s gunning for a third consecutive Women’s Big Bash League title.

Mandhana is no stranger to the WBBL, having previously played for three other teams: Brisbane Heat (WBBL|02), Hobart Hurricanes (WBBL|04), and Sydney Thunder (WBBL|07). Her standout performance came in WBBL|07 when she smashed an unbeaten 114 off just 64 balls against the Melbourne Renegades. With a career strike rate of 130, Mandhana is expected to bring significant firepower to the Strikers’ batting lineup, further strengthening their quest for another championship.

Mandhana’s cricketing credentials are formidable. She is one of only two players, alongside Australia’s Ellyse Perry, to have won the prestigious ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award twice. Her inclusion in the Strikers lineup underscores the team’s commitment to excellence and signals their intent to dominate the league once again.

Mandhana has also proven her leadership abilities. Earlier this year, she captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL). Her experience in leading teams to success will be invaluable as she joins forces with Strikers coach Luke Williams, with whom she has a proven track record.

Expressing her excitement about the move, Mandhana said, “I always look forward to playing in Australia, and I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to a team with a history of success like the Strikers. Working with Luke again is something I’m really looking forward to; we’ve had great experiences together in the past, and I’m eager to build on that.”

Coach Luke Williams, who previously collaborated with Mandhana at Southern Brave in The Hundred, is equally enthusiastic about her signing. “Smriti is an exceptional talent, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Strikers. Her technical skill, experience, and strategic insights are a tremendous asset for us,” Williams said. “I know firsthand the dedication and energy she brings to the team and on the field. Her expertise and leadership will be invaluable as we drive for success in the upcoming season.”

In addition to securing Mandhana’s talents, the Adelaide Strikers have also been active in pre-draft trades. The team has struck a deal with the Melbourne Renegades, trading Picks 19 and 30 in exchange for Picks 22 and 27. This move allows the Strikers to fine-tune their draft strategy ahead of the WBBL|10 Draft, which will take place on Sunday, September 1. The draft will be broadcast live across multiple platforms, including The Seven Network, 7plus, Fox Sports, and Kayo Sports.

The Adelaide Strikers’ campaign kicks off on October 27, with their first match of the season against the Brisbane Heat at the iconic Adelaide Oval. Fans can expect an exhilarating season ahead, with Mandhana’s arrival promising to elevate the Strikers’ performance to new heights.
