The Indonesian women’s cricket team has qualified for the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, which will take place in South Africa next between January 14th and 29th this year. Luckily, it will be their first-ever ICC event, and they are looking to make the country proud.
The team secured their spot with a win over Papua New Guinea in a best-of-three event. In the decisive final over, Indonesian bowler Ayu Kurniartini took two wickets to secure the victory for her team and earn Indonesia a place in their first-ever ICC World Cup at any level.
Indonesian captain Wesikaratna Dewi expressed her excitement and pride in the team, stating that they are determined to make Indonesia proud with their success at the World Cup.
PNG’s Dika Lohia was named the Best Bowler and Player of the Tournament for her performance, which included a five-wicket haul and an unbeaten 25 in a successful run chase.
The Acting Chairperson of Persatuan Cricket Indonesia, Abhiram Singh Yadav, said the win represents a new milestone for women’s sports in Indonesia and that they look forward to showcasing their culture at the World Cup in South Africa. The ICC Tournament Director, Rob Gomm, congratulated Indonesia and expressed confidence that Papua New Guinea will benefit from the experience.
It is pertinent to mention that they are placed in Group C alongside Ireland, New Zealand, and West Indies. The squad is as follows:
