The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq as the Chief Selector of the Pakistan team on August 7th. However, his tenure has seen its share of challenges.
On two occasions, Inzamam expressed his intention to resign from the role. The first instance arose when he wasn’t offered a contract despite finalizing the squad for series against Afghanistan and the Asia Cup. Following discussions with PCB management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf, a three-year contract was eventually agreed upon, along with a significant monthly remuneration exceeding 2 million rupees.
During the recent Asia Cup in Lahore, Inzamam voiced dissatisfaction again, this time seeking full authority to grant No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to players for league participation. Notably, Inzamam’s agents represent several national cricketers, including Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan.
The PCB, concerned about potential conflicts of interest, hesitated to grant the Chief Selector full autonomy in issuing NOCs, prompting Inzamam to threaten resignation once more.
In response to these continuous demands, the PCB contemplated appointing Misbah ul Haq or Nadeem Khan as Chief Selector. However, they eventually managed to find common ground with Inzamam, avoiding a conflict.
While relations appear amicable for now, the future may hold more disputes arising from conflicting interests and egos within the cricketing hierarchy.
