Rishabh Pant’s long-awaited return to cricket after a horrific car accident last year was met with a heartwarming standing ovation from the crowd during the Delhi Capitals’ opening match against the Punjab Kings on Saturday.

The star wicket-keeper batter, who had been sidelined for 15 months, walked out to bat amidst thunderous applause, a testament to his resilience in overcoming a near-fatal ordeal.

In December 2022, Pant’s car accident on New Year’s Eve left him with multiple injuries and a challenging rehabilitation process. He underwent surgeries and spent months regaining his strength, even the ability to walk again.

The fighting spirit of the batter paid off as Delhi Capitals declared him fit for both batting and wicket-keeping duties ahead of IPL 2024. This marked his return to competitive cricket after missing not only the current season but also last year’s IPL due to the accident.

The crowd erupted in a standing ovation, recognizing the immense effort Pant poured into his recovery journey. Their cheers echoed a message of encouragement for his unwavering determination to return to the sport he loves.

However, the emotional homecoming couldn’t translate into victory for Delhi. Pant’s score of 18 off 13 deliveries remained a minor contribution as they set a target of 174 runs. Unfortunately, the Punjab Kings chased down the total comfortably within 19.2 overs, winning the match by four wickets.

While the result may not have been ideal, Pant’s return to the field itself signifies a triumph over adversity. The cricketing world eagerly awaits his return to form as the IPL season progresses.
